ASME Oversight with reassignment of 904L (N08904) from SB-674 to SA-249? 2

I am designing an ASME VIII-1 heat exchanger fabricated from 904L materials, but there appears to be a disconnect in ASME with tubing materials.

One of the changes in the 2015 edition of the code was the reassignment of 904L steel from SB-designations to SA-designations. For example:

[li]Fittings: SB-366 changed to SA-403[/li]
[li]Plate : SB-625 changed to SA-240[/li]
[li]Wld pipe: SB-673 changed to SA-312[/li]
[/ul]

Something seems to have been missed though when it comes to welded tubing.

In 2013, welded tubing was listed in the codes as follows:

[li]ASME VIII-1 (2013): Included in Table UNF-23.3 under SB-674[/li]
[li]ASME IID (2013): Allowable stress included for SB-674[/li]
[/ul]

In the 2015 code however, it looks like welded tubing moved in one code, but was overlooked in the other:

[li]ASME VIII-1 (2015): Included in Table UNF-23.3 under SA-249, SB-674 removed[/li]
[li]ASME IID (2015): Allowable stress unchanged, only SB-674 included. No SA-249 listed.[/li]
[/ul]

I've browsed through all of the latest code cases, but can't find anything that addresses this issue. Has anyone dealt with this disconnect?

Yes, many times. ASME Code book Sections have their own Agendas and shared items for balloting. Sometimes it takes a few meeting cycles for joint items being balloted to catch up. Especially now with the 2 year publication cycle.

So as it stands, you can not use any welded tube specification for fabrication of a 904L heat exchanger?

Or, do I reference UG-15, and utilize the SB-674 material? (after checking the additional subsections of UG-15)

The SB-674-N08904 spec really shouldn't have been removed from ASME VIII-1 until it has been confirmed that SA-249-N08904 has been added to ASME IID.

Heh, I just noticed another mistake with 904L in the codes, this time relating to plate materials.

In Table UHA-23, I believe that the SA-240 spec no. should be starting one line higher beside N08904.

As it currently reads, the code references an SA-217-N08904, which doesn't exist.

Submit an errata to the Secretary of Section VIII Div 1. Better yet you are welcome to become a Code volunteer.

I've submitted an errata request to the secretary.

An errata could be issued for either VIII-1 or IID though, I don't know which is easier. You could correct ASME IID changing SB-674 to SA-249, or you could change ASME VIII-1 to allow SB-674. I'm guessing that since VIII-1 wants to change over to SA-249, the best solution would be to issue an errata for IID.

The best solution though may depend on the feedback of a cat psychologist...
