Hello everybody,

I am wondering how thoroughly the pressure vessel manufacturers go in their receiving inspection of heads when they are produced by a third party.

It seems there are two philosophies:
A) Vessel manufacturer basing their receiving inspection by the review of the certificate of compliance from the head manufacturer verification of thickness and geometry results stated on the report).
B) Vessel manufacturer performing measurement of the head at reception.

For those going in the path of philosophy B, how are you performing the inspection? UT for thickness measurement and templates for profile verification?

I found two ASME interpretations in relation to this subject: VIII-1-83-229 and VIII-1-92-106.

Thanks!

We receive formed heads of all sorts of sizes and schedule thicknesses. We typically rely on the supplier to perform the correct work. We will perform a check on the size/thickness as well as verify the heat# to the MTR. Typically we throw a tape measure across the opening and then a caliper on the edge. There is usually little need to go much further unless you really did not have faith in your supplier; in which case that's a completely different issue. MTR + quick check should be sufficient.

I know some shops that receive a set size of head have a cardboard cutout just for a quick check; but if you receive >24 different sizes/shapes then it's not necessarily practical.

Depend on material, thickness and service.

For lethal, low temperature, PWHT, …etc. I don'trust anyone. Inspection plan is required.

It is driven on what is stated in the Certificate Holders approved/accepted QC Manual. For Section VIII Div. 1 the requirements are in App. 10-6. Most have a Inspection Reports for Heads completed. The use of templates and calibrated measuring equipment are included. It should include a documented thickness check of the thinnest point which is up in the crown portion of the head.
