Good afternoon

Interpretation ASME Section 1 PW-11

Required Volumetric Examination of Butt Welds

RT Coverage ASME Section 1 PW-11
< NPS 4in (100DN) RT is not required

>NPS 4in (100DN) or >1/2in (13mm) then Volumetric RT is required.

NPS 3in wall thickness >1/2in (13mm) then RT is required?

NPS 1in, NPS 2in,wall thickness 4.19mm or any thickness upto 13mm then RT is not required.

PW-11 General Notes -

(g) Where the thickness is below 1/2in (13mm) then RT shall be conducted.

My interpretation for this is

> NPS 4 (100mm) with a wall thickness of <1/2in (13mm) then RT shall be used.

Thanks for the clarifications.

It is specified as or. Therefore whenever either one of the requirements match then RT has to be carried out. For Eg, 8" sch 60 shall be tested by RT, it is not exempted.

The requirement for RT at or below 1/2" thickness is because of detectability issues using UT. So, yes RT would be performed.

If volumetric examination is required by PW-11 because of OD or thickness, weld configuration and location in the boiler, you RT for 1/2" or below in thickness and above 1/2" you either RT or UT if volumetric examination is required.

You must review and understand all of the General Notes in Table PW-11, they are very important.
