ASME Section I automatic controls requirements?

I am looking for the requirements for automatic controls on an ASME Section I boiler.

Under part PG the requirements for water level indication, temperature indication, and pressure indication don't seem to require any automatic control action to shut off the source of fuel.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Kelly

koneill44,

ASME Sec I has provisions for water level gauges and pressure relief valves.

The automatic controls that you are looking for might actually be described in the ASME Sec VII Recommended Guidelines for the Care of Power Boilers, subsection C5 Instrumentation, Controls, and Interlocks. The water, steam and combustion controls are discussed. Redundancy of automatic controls for remote control room operation is also covered.

The ASME CSD-1 (2004 ?) sets requirements for controls and safety devices for automatically fired boilers. It has an exclusion for boilers more than 12,500,000 Btu/hr otherwise in scope of NFPA 85, or for natural gas fired boilers more than 400,000 Btu/hr. These are probably much smaller than the boiler that you are concerned about.

Try the fuel utilization code for your jurisdiction. Things like the codes for natural gas burning appliances cover low-water & overpressure burner interlock requirements, etc.

ASME I requires a "low-water cutoff controller"
that is the "fuel cutoff" you are looking for.

NOTE CSD-1 is more stringent and further comes UL Stds

I have not worked with a section I boiler in a very long time. Consider the NFPA 85 Boiler and Combustion System Hazards Code for burner control requirements in addition to a few ASME requirements.

CSD-1 mentions ASME BPVC Section I or IV in CW-510 pertaining to safety relief valves for steam and hot-water. Later, the non mandatory appendix D preventative maintenance schedule requires testing the relief valves according to ASME BPVC Section VI and VII; and low water fuel cutoff check list mentions a slow drain test per Section VI.

ASME Section VII subsection C5 applied to Instrumentation, Controls and Interlocks. This appears to be inactive per my IHS listing.

ASME B31.1 reflects the "Administrative Jurisdiction and Technical Responsibility" or piping code interfaces. B31.1 mentions requirements for tandem gas pressure reducing valves, trip stop valve and safety relief devices. B31.3 also mentions NFPA 1963.

FYI, the VA publishes a standard FED H-08-1 SEC 15901 "Automatic controls, instruments, monitoring and data management systems and accessories for the boilers, burners and other boiler plant mechanical equipment. The specification classifies the systems into automatic boiler and burner control systems, burner management systems (flame safeguard), and data management and instrumentation systems."
