Hi

Help, I'm a doubt,

For sizing safety valves I have this conditions;
The valves are installed on in-plant process, piping system.
Service = High Pressure Steam "Heater",
Normal Flow = 579 t/h, (the same one or similar to relief, scenario by back-flow or shutdown process)
Opn Pressure = 870 psig
Opn Temp = 906°F,
Set Pressure = 942 psig, (this one is in the first place, maybe we have need 3 safety valves)
Desig Temp = 946°F,
MAWP or Design Pressure of Piping System = 1,163 psig,

What code is requered? ASME section I or ASME section VIII

Thanks

If you are outside of the first primary block valve of the boiler (is your steam heater classified as such?) then you are still in B31.3 / ASME VIII scope.

But...

By "steam heater", is the steam heating something or is the steam being heated by something? 870 psig at 906 F is about 376 F of superheat if I am reading my Steam Table app correctly.

If those are the conditions I am inclined to say ASME I.

Ok , thanks SNORGY.

Excuse me,

The complete word is super-heater, STEAM SUPER-HEATER,

The valves are installed far away and outside of the boiler battery,

Sizing by
1. upset on the cogeneration plant ( supplier of steam super-heater)
2. Back-flow by customers (back-flow of processes units or consumers of steamm, shutdown, failures of processes,)

Objetive: Provide positive overpressure protection to piping system (steam header)

Thanks

If the heater was designed and stamped to ASME VIII,1 your PRV will be UV or V but if designed to I, PRV must be V. If it is outside the scope of the ASME, check your Jurisdiction to see if allowes otherwise.
