Hello

I`m new to ASME IX
A complete joint penetration PQR was done with SMAW on 1/4" thick material, it is qualified for base metal thickness up to 2T so 1/2" thick. QW-202.2(C) For fillets weld: all base metal thicknesses and all fillet sizes.
I now need to fillet weld some attachments that are 1 inch thick. Does this mean that my maximum plate thickness is 1/2" for fillet welds or do fillet weld have a unlimited material thickness meaning I could weld some attachments plates that are 6" thick.

Thanks for your time

Horserider22,

Your supposition is correct, fillets are unlimited. However, there is a difference between a procedure being qualified to make the specific fillet weld versus the procedure being capable of making a sound fillet weld. You may want to test one of these fillet welds in accordance with ASME IX Table 451.3 to insure the procedure is capable of making the specific, souind fillet weld.
