Good Afternoon,

First post.... Looking for some help interpreting ASME Section IX QW200.4

I am looking to support combining two weld Procedures, NCBWB 1-32-1 (GTAW root) and NCPWB 1-1-2 (SMAW 6010 fill and cap)

We are looking to take the rod control out of the field environment and use our standard of 6010, but the customer is still looking for the GTAW root for cleanliness. After Reading ASME Section IX QW200.4 it appears this is acceptable, but i am having trouble interpreting the thickness range qualified and the PQR requirements to do so. Any help in combining these WPS correctly?

Thank you!

Yes, ASME Section IX QW-200.4 allows combining WPSs if both are qualified separately. Your GTAW root (NCBWB 1-32-1) and SMAW 6010 fill/cap (NCPWB 1-1-2) can be combined as long as they each meet the essential variable requirements.

For thickness range:
  • Check QW-451 for qualified ranges based on your PQR thickness.
  • The combined WPS thickness range is based on the individual PQRs unless you qualify a new PQR for the combined process.
For PQR requirements:
  • If both PQRs are already qualified, you don’t need a new PQR, just a properly written combined WPS referencing both.
  • If thickness or essential variables don’t match, you may need a new PQR to cover the full range.
Hope that helps!

Search this site. It has been discussed many times.
You can combine multiple WPSs in a single weld joint.
You can also use 200.4(b) to increase the thickness qualified on a new WPS....assuming you meet the requirements of 200.4(b).
If your GTAW was done on a 1/2" thick coupon, you can combine it with a 6010 PQR, qualifying up to the thickness allowed by the 6010 PQR.
1/2" GTAW = 1" qualified
1.5" E6010 = 8" qualified

Combine these two PQRs to use GTAW for root (2t max) and E6010 up to 8" total thickness.
