ASME VIII-1 Appendix-46 Materials 2

Dear All

I am assessing a component following ASME VIII-2 Part 5 according to ASME VIII-1 Appendix 46 as it can not be verified with design by rule procedures of ASME VIII-1.

For this component, do I need to consider only the allowed materials in ASME VIII-2 or can I use other allowed materials in ASME VIII-1?

Your material selection will be based on your Code of Construction. In this case, you are using ASME Section VIII, Division 1 as your Code of Construction - therefore the allowed materials will be in accordance with ASME Section VIII, Division 1.

Appendix 46 permits some different calculations (be they design-by-rules or design-by-analysis) within the context of ASME Section VIII, Division 1. Appendix 46 does not restrict materials any further than those otherwise permitted in ASME Section VIII, Division 1.

To further add onto this, since you are using ASME VIII-2 Part 5 but the code of construction is VIII-1, you need to limit yourself the to material yield stresses allowed by VIII-1.
