Hi,

I am designing a tank and some of the nozzles do not meet the code requirements (UG-45) (pipe 3 inch SCH.160 thickness 11.13 mm; it would be necessary 11.247).
According to ASME VIII is it allowed to measure the thickness of the pipe and use it in the design?
The actual thickness of the pipe would meet the verification.

Thank you

Standard Designation: BPV Section VIII Div 1
Edition/Addenda:
Para./Fig./Table No:
Subject Description: Section VIII-1, UG-16(d), Actual Pipe Thickness
Date Issued: 09/26/1985
Record Number: BC85-287
Interpretation Number : VIII-1-86-11
Question(s) and Reply(ies):
Question (1): Does UG-16(d) allow the selection of nominal pipe size material which has an actual minimum thickness which is equal to or greater than the calculated minimum wall thickness, regardless of the fact that the undertolerances provide material which is less than that required?

Reply (1): No.

Question (2): Does UG-16(d) require that the nominal thickness less the manufacturing undertolerance be equal to or greater than the minimum thickness required?

Reply (2): Yes.

Standard Designation: BPV Section VIII Div 1
Edition/Addenda: 2017 edition
Para./Fig./Table No: UG-16(d)
Subject Description: Pipe Undertolerance
Date Issued: 11/04/2019
Record Number: 19-1218
Interpretation Number : BPV VIII-1-19-18
Question(s) and Reply(ies):
Background Information: Section VIII Div. 1 paragraph UG-16(d) requires that the manufacturing undertolerance on wall thickness to be taken into account when pipe is ordered by its nominal wall thickness. These questions pertain to pipe ordered to a minimum wall thickness that includes the corrosion allowance.

Question(1): If permitted by the applicable pipe specification (e.g., SA-335 and SA-999), does the Code allow pipe to be ordered to a minimum wall thickness?
Reply(1): Yes

Question(2): If the answer to Question(1) is Yes, is the pipe manufacturing undertolerance in UG-16(d) mandatory for such pipe?
Reply(2): No.

Question(3): If the answer to Question(1) is Yes, shall the minimum thickness be indicated on the Manufacturer's Data Report?
Reply(3): Yes
