Why does ASME VIII Div 1 - 2007 have a picture of a storage tank on the front cover?

Why not? So does the Section I, and I am not jealous.

metengr,
I suspect that you are biased (as ASME commitee member you are probably contributor to the selection of the picture), hence your vote should be void. The question is still valid and require a solid engineering justification. How dare they...

As section VIII div 1 is not applicable to storage tanks a pcture of a PV would have been more appropriate.
For newcomers the code is complicated enough as it is

If a picture of a tank confuses newcomers... maybe we don't want 'em designing vessels?

Though I'll tend to agree, a shot of a vessel might have been more appropriate.

As for solid engineering justification - well, we could call it "round off error" or "within an order of magnitude" or something. After all, consider some alternatives: The cover could have had a photo of an airplane (still, generally round, long, and pressurized), a cruise ship (a.k.a. a "vessel"), a pretty scene of colorful fall leaves, perhaps a portrait of some global leader, children playing soccer, folks enjoying the sun at a beach...

But... I gotta wonder why it took so long for roca to notice?

The most likely answer is that some "public affairs" or "technical editor" person was in charge of actually getting the document to print. He or she listened to all the engineer's earnest descriptions of what was covered by Section VIII, then went out and found a free picture that, in his (or her) mind, was representative. And even though the engineer probably complained, some power-that-be probably decided that it didn't matter as no one would notice or care.

The reason I postulate the above as being the case, is that there is an Nuclear Regulatory Commission brochure, intended to provide the general public a basic understanding of what NRC does. In the brochure, in the middle of the discussion about NRC's oversight of nuclear medicine, there's a nice picture of a linear accelerator. NRC doesn't regulate linear accelerators...

I'm actually a brick layer. Designing static equipment is something i do on the side so I don't look at the code too often

Just a quick clarification;- Down Under the brick laying is a full time 5 years degree, running a two semester Static Equipment design course. Extra curricullum subject is ASME VIII-1,2 and 3. Requires private tuition for PV Elite.
Cheers,

Wow! A brick layer working on the North Rankin 2 project. [wink]

Does notbother me, it is just an
Artist expression.. or w... dream!

do I know you doct9960..?

Its right up there with the environmentalists continually showing water vapour from cooling towers at powers stations to illustrate pollution.

We have just had the coldest winter in 65 years in Sydney. Thankfully we had global warming or our little tootsies would have frozen off.

I met in february an ASME PV Committee member, i asked the same question, no reply, and for sure nobody knows the why

Don't know why a full time bricklayer can't perform complex pressure vessel design. After all we get people who are piping designers one day and the next day call themselves fully qualified/experienced pipe stress engineers. No difference!!

Amen......DSB123

When industry needs a lot of people with a certain skill, job requirements loosen and everybody qualifies.

When they do not require that skill, a steel detailing job that originally needed a designer suddenly requires a structural PHD.

Its all a scam...
