Hello,
I am working with master modeler in nx4 and t/c v10. We are a forging shop and like to show our tool assemblie prints in 2 different phases of press movement. the first with the press closed and the 2nd with the press open on the same drawing sheet. Currently we work with solid works and the configurations work quite nicely for us. we just tell the view which configuration to reference. Our transistion to UG has forced us to use layers more than before so, i was hoping to make an associative copy of the assembly onto a different layer and use the layer mask in the drawing, much to my suprise you cannot make an associative copy of an assembly only parts. Do you know of another way? I was also trying to use reference sets but, can't seem to get anywhere with that. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you

In NX, Assembly 'Arrangements' are the intended replacement for the Ideas 'Configurations', however if you intend to perform similar types of Assembly operations in NX as you have been doing with Ideas you will need to upgrade to at least NX 5.0 or newer. NX 5.0 was when we made the majority of the changes needed to assure the migration of not only Ideas assembly functionality, but also the ability to migrate the Assembly files themselves.

Anyway, you need to give serious consideration to making the upgrade as there is no practical solution for what you're trying to do with NX 4.0, but there are solutions in more current versions of NX.

Thanks for the response! unfortunately our global company will not make the switch to nx7 until end of 1st quarter at the very earliest. For the meantime we will have to work around this.

I see solidworks mentioned in the original post, but not Ideas. Do you see something in the jpg that can't be done in NX4?

Solidworks bought ideas out, so some still reference it as being ideas. A work around that i have started to investigate is to build (2) subassemblies. 1 for die side and 1 for punch side. Then insert both subassemblies twice into the same model on different layers, then i should be able to use visible by layers function in drafting. Do you agree?

That method should work, but if you are using a parts list your quantities will be incorrect. You may be able to manually tweak it to get what you want.

Really? I thought Ideas was being integrated into UG and that's why they decided to rename it NX?

For the record, SDRC, the developer and owner of Ideas, was acquired by EDS in 2001 and merged with UGS, which was a partially owned EDS subsidiary at the time, and from which was formed a new company combining the two organizations, naming it PLM Solutions. A few years later, EDS sold PLM Solutions to a group of private investors who eventually sold it to Siemens AG where it now operates as Siemens PLM Software, Inc. as part of the Siemens Industry sector. That being said, Ideas has NEVER been part of Solid Works nor has it been affiliated with any company other than the tread as described above.
