Assigning materials to selected components

Hello Everyone!

I'm looking for a way to assign library materials to a great number of components I have in an assembly. I found the thread above but I have a really hard time accepting that the only two ways are either doing it by hand or by writing an application. How is this not a trivial task to do? I've also found this which I assume is the same problem, and there's no solution from four years ago?

Am I completely missing something?
