I am currently working on the idea of petitioning for inclusion of 4340 forgings for use in ASME Section VIII Div. 3 pressure vessels. Section II only allows for 4340 to be used for bolting material.
We have used the material, up to 60ksi, prior to the creation of the Div. 3 code, and are hoping to use it again.
I wanted to know if anyone has any insight into why 4340 was never included in Section II. I would also like to know if anyone has ever petitioned for its inclusion before, and what were the results.
I also want to know if anyone out there has ever filed a petition before and how it went, or if you have any advice. This will be my first time and I would like to know what to expect.
