Hi i wonder if anybody can help me with a code problem. I am busy qualifying a new welding procedure in accordance with ASME IX the test coupon material is ASTM A 270 TP304 i am struggling with this materials P number as ASME II part A(2015) nor ASME IX(2015) list this material.

So my question is, is this material then classified as a unlisted material or does it have a P number as this will this obviously limited me substantially if it is an unlisted material

It's quite confusing as a thought all ASTM materials have a P-number

This is tube material for sanitary use, which is why you cannot find this material in Section II, Part A. This material would be assigned as P-No 8.

Materials made to spec that are not in the Code will not have assigned numbers. The easy way to is look at SA249 and see what the P number is.
Is this piping being done to the BPE? It can't be done to B&PVC, the sanitary specs don't require tensile testing.

Just to be clear you can find P-No base material assignments for other non-code base materials in Section IX and material number assignments M-No similar to P-No assignments in AWS B2.1. ASTM A 270 is assigned as M-No 8 in AWS B2.1.

ASTM A 270 TP304 is an unlisted material.

But in ASME IX QW-420 is clear stated:
"......
If an unlisted base metal has the same UNS number designation as a base metal listed in Table QW/QB-422, that base metal is also assigned that P-Number or P-Number plus Group Number.
If the unlisted base metal is used for procedure qualification, the minimum tensile value of the listed base metal shall apply for the tension test specimens.
..."

Therefore ASTM A 270 TP304 is assigned to P-No. 8. and can be used for qualifying all P-No. 8 Materials provided that during the tensile test 75 ksi was reached.

...but since A270 does not require tensile testing I would not rely on it unless the mill happened to supply tensile data.
