In general, standard minimum forging ratio is 3:1 for open-die forging method.
Forger actual performed base on ratio 5.5:1 on F51 forging of valve component(closure).
How does this forging ratio leads to the better material flow lines ?

How & what checks are performed to see whether the material flow lines conform approximately to the final shape of forging (eg.valve component-closure)?

Which ASTM standard to be used to examine material flow line of A182 F51 ?
ASTM E381 or E340 is the right standard ?)

Appreciate expert's advice.
Thank you.

ASTM E340 is the correct standard for a forging. ASTM E381 is for billets and other products with a cast structure.

A higher forging ratio breaks up the original cast/dendritic structure and any inclusions resulting in more benefical flow lines.
