I'm receiving some vessel alredy designed, to be used for CO2 at -30°, and stipulated to be ASTM A-283-C.

Is it correct to use this material? I'm a newbie in Cryogenic applications...

Would you help me understand basics about it? some special tests for materials?

Thanks.

Well, as A283 is structural quality plate, it wouldn't have been my first choice as a pressure vessel material at those temperatures. Best review ASME VIII as to the requirements for materials at low temperatures.

Thanks, Steve, I'm looking on that, I just wanted to have another viewpoint.

As stated you need to consult the ASME code. However I did find this within the ASTM A 283 standard.

here is an internet link

ASTM A 283 covers low and intermediate tensile strength carbon

steel plates for general manufacturing and constructional applications. This material is normally supplied in the rimmed or semikilled types of steel and is particularly suitable for the economical production of assemblies requiring a considerable amount of forming. Variations in low temperature impact properties are great and these steels are not recommended for those applications
requiring low temperature notch toughness.

A283 does not have have adequate toughness at the temperature you mention. A temperature of -30F or -30C is not cryogenic, its just a low temperature.

Look @ UCS-66 - maybe use SA-516 normalized [curve D]
or SA-516-55or60 as-welded [curve C] ??

I would typically not use a material that either; 1)does not qualify for impact test exception, or 2)does not have supplementary impact testing listed in the material spec. You'd be better off switching to SA516 as arto mentioned.
