I have a project involving modifications to a plate steel penstock serving a hydro power plant build in the early 1950’s. The plate steel is noted to conform with “ASTM-A285-49T” spec’s. While I have material data for more recent “ASTM-A285” standards I am unable to locate anything on the “49T” standard. Can anyone provide material spec’s in accordance with this old standard?

Thanks for any help you may provide

I have found old ASTM specs in the Houston Main Library and in the Los Angeles Main Library in the past.

You can also try the Linda Hall Library. They have a huge amount of info available at very reasonable prices.

I have the A 285-57T standard, which is probably very similar to the 49T standard. What information do you need?

There are three Grades, A,B, and C. Regarding chemistry and tensile requirements there are flange and firebox quality for all three Grades.

T by the way is for tentative standard.

AS metengr indicated, there has not been substantive changes in A-285 regarding chemistry/manufacturing/testing requirements. If you are contemplating modifications involving welding, you will want to know the actual steel chemisty or at least whether it was fully deoxidized ("Killed", semi-killed or rimmed. This steel was made before BOF melting was introduced in the USA and before oxygen lancing was introduced in Open Hearth melting. One should assume that it also has relatively high P & S contents versus modern steels. I would advise performing chemical analysis to determine Si, P & S contents, as a minimum, prior to welding.
