ASTM A36 Steel Plate above 38mm 2

In my last question on Eng-Tips, I asked about the average price for Carbon Steel Plates up to 38mm. You experts told me that the price was about $0,35 to $0,45 per lb.

Now I would like to know if for thickness above 38mm, the expected price is the same or the price increase as the thickness rises? In case of changing prices, what is the estimated percentage of this variation?

Why rely on us experts (that can really only give you good second-hand info) when you could call a steel supplier and get specific info that is up to date?

I've spent more money on steel so far this week than I earned last year. It was not a good year, but that's still a lot of steel. I've been buying steel for about a month, Mostly structural shapes, some plate and flats, none as thick as 38mm, but a good variety.

The quoted price, delivered, ranged from $.38/lb to $.90/lb for hot rolled, and up to $1.50/lb for cold finished.

The general rule is, there is no general rule. Even for a single shape, alloy, length, the price goes up and down over a range of at least $.10/lb within a week, sometimes in a day. If you want an unusually big piece, or something that's at all uncommon in your area, the price will be higher, and you can expect a great range in price, too.

The point is, steel is a commodity sold in an open market, and the price you'll pay depends on what you want, how much there is, who else wants it, where it is, where you want it delivered, and the phase of the moon.

An 'average price' has no significance whatsoever. The only price that matters is the price you pay when you buy it.
