This following issue keeps circling in my company. We have some machined parts (e.g. 4340 HTSR shaft) that have their ultrasonic NDT done per the ASTM A388 standard. It is never clear to us what is the proper acceptance criteria to specify for this standard. Other standards (say ASTM A578) typically spells out clearly several acceptance levels. We want to avoid having to specify the UT to be done per A388 and then the acceptance criteria done per other codes.

So my question is, does A388 have its own acceptance criteria? I have narrowed it down to two possible sections: section 9 "Recording" or section S1 "Reporting Criteria".

Your response is appreciated.

A388 is a standard practice, it will not give you acceptance criteria.
You need to look in a product spec or a general spec for that information.
