It has been several years since I have posted a question to this site. I am working in the Arctic and have been asked to design some small bridges for one of the commmunities here. As you may imagine, materials are extremely costly to ship up (once a year barge or flying in makes it all prohibitively expensive). In this particular community we have recently torn up some fuel pipelines - Schedule 40 pipe in long sections, and in good shape. The bridges are for over some seasonal creeks and deep gullies, and wiil be wide enough for only snow machines and All Terrain Vehicles. I am used to designing with standard structural steel, and am having great difficulty in finding the appropirate Young's Modulus to use for Schedule 40 pipe. I believe it is a steel with the characteristics very similar to AISI 1018, a mild steel. I am using conservative values: Yield Strength = 30 ksi Tensile Strength = 48 ksi. I believe that Young's Modulus should be similar to structural steel (29x10^6 psi). Does this sound right?
