We were required by our customer to use ASTM A564 Type 630, Condition A, Process H1150 Plate material. Our supplier sent us ASTM A693 Type 630, Condition A, Process H1150. Is there a difference? If so, what is it? I noticed that they both fall under the 17-4 designation.

Thank you,

SPB

ASTM A564 is for bars and shapes, A 693 is plate and strip. I don't have the specs. 17-4 PH apparently could be in each. I would like it better if your requirement was solution Anneal, then 1150 age (for some specific time).

It looks like other than the wrought product form - bars and shapes (A 564) versus plate, sheet or strip (A 693), the main difference is in material thickness and some mechanical properties. These are enough differences to signal a detailed review.

I have both material specifications after after my review, I would strongly urge you to purchase both. They are detailed and there are differences in the mechanical test requirements after age hardening heat treatment due to the product form differences, especially thickness.

Don't compound the problem by incorrectly certifying material.
If your customer will not listen to reason (titles of the Material Specs.) then:

Perform all requirements of the plate spec and provide a certification to the plate spec. Also, do any additional testing that would be required by the bar spec. and indicate those tests were done on a piece of bar made from the plate. Use a statement on your certification similar to: The processes and results have been evaluated (or reconciled) and meet the requirements of ASTM A-564 Cond. H1150.

Good Luck
