I am looking at the ASTM Standard A%^$.

I see that there are different types associated with the UNS Designations. Why does it go from a 600 series to an XM series...does the XM have a specific meaning?

Any good references to get more details on the way stainless is designated?

Thanks in advance

Sorry that should have said A564 - looks like I had the SHIFT button held down!

This might not help much, but check this astm page

Development of the Unified Numbering System

Quote:
"Discontinued numbers—The AISI decided to discontinue the practice of designating numbers for steels, and this was a particular problem with regard to the assignment of designations to new stainless steels. ASTM was attempting to fill the gap by issuing a new series of numbers for proprietary stainless steels (e.g., XM-1, XM-2, XM-3, etc.)"

From that I gather that it is arbitrary, with the X or the M not standing for anything in particular.

Thanks kclim...that shed some light on the issue.
