Good day,

Can anyone explain what is meant by "Type PSM" on the ASTM D 3034 standard for Gravity PVC Sewer? Also, does anyone know if this standard relates to Plasticised or Unplasticised PVC?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Regards,

Ria

Terminology

3.1 Definitions—Definitions are in accordance with Terminology F412, and abbreviations are in accordance with Terminology D1600, unless otherwise specified. The abbreviation of poly(vinyl chloride) plastics is PVC.
3.1.1 The term PSM is not an abbreviation but rather an arbitrary designation for a product having certain dimensions.

PSM = sewer pipe OD

unplasticized PVC is written as uPVC

While I don't have a current, controlled copy of this standard, I believe it has traditionally been for rigid (i.e. mostly unplasticized) pvc pipe. I also believe rigid pvc has at least traditionally been the most common of the pvc compounds used for sewer service in the USA, and gravity pipes have sometimes been compounded with even higher levels of "fillers" (such as calcium carbonate/talc) than pressure pipes, that may increase at least the short-term stiffness and lower at least the manufacturing cost of the pipe. I like you will await more learned response.
