I am working as a "green" QE for a company that manufactures bearings, and one of our test methods for our Solvent and oil baths calls out the % sediment reported for said baths. Our test procedures call out ASTM D96, however from what I can tell we don't have any instruments called out by said standard. Could I get away with using a non-heated centrifuge or simply gravity, as the company is reluctant to purchase a dedicated machine for a test that is only performed once a year?
Secondly I have looked into using ASTM D473 as an alternative. However this standard calls out the usage of Toluene (or similar solvent) for use with oils, but our system also uses a solvent. It wouldn't make sense to use a solvent with a solvent no? Thank you for your assistance in advance.
