Hi,

Just curious, does anyone know why ASTM F586 - "Test Method for Leak Rates Versus Y Stresses and M Factors for Gaskets (Withdrawn 1998)" was withdrawn?

Is testing of m & y values being slowly phased out now?

jte, yes, fading for years now. Someday it'll be true:)

Yep, that's why I deliberately didn't use the word "sunsetting". Early evening, perhaps?

Good morning all,
I am using the m=2 and Y=17.2 guaranteed by at least two other gasket manufacturers (apart of Flexitallic), for the last three years, having Lloyds and DNV accepted them in third party design verification. The last 40 or so heat exchangers were fitted with these gaskets. Fading? Early evening? Wake up, is mornig already! Has anybony noticed that the 2007 edition of ASME VIII, Table 2-5.1 the reference to asbestos was removed for the first time? Unlike AS 1210 and PD5500 who are still referring to asbestos filler for gaskets! in the 21 century!
Cheers,

jte,

That garlock paper is a good one, I had read of the Gb,a,Gs method, but this really solidified the concept for me.

Could I seek all of your opinions for two questions.

1. I had posted earlier about trying to find the m&y constants for a cotton phenolic gasket with a neoprene adhered to each side, is there a way to find a similar gaskets Gb,a,Gs value that I can use for the phenolic? No manufacturers I have asked m&y info.

2. Is building an inexpensive test stand to do the ROTT test feasible? Is this something one could do to get reliable Gb,a,Gs values. How much would something like this cost?
