Typically, ASTM G48 provides a test method to follow, however, it is up to the Purchaser to define the actual acceptance criteria.

Typical evaluation would be according to ASTM G 46 Standard Guide for Examination and Evaluation of Pitting Corrosion. This guide allows for rating the density, size, and depth of pits. The end user would specify maxima for these criteria.

G48 test methods are not suitable for 316 because its critical pitting temp is below room temp. Running in ferric chloride at temps near freezing is a real pain.
Usually 316 is testing NaCl. The best bet might be an electrochemical test.

For 316 L you may use A262 Practice E.

This test can be used for general evaluation of SS material (To find out whether the material is properly heat treated (Solution annealed).

If you are interested in corrosion rates in a given servece you may want to try Practice B, C, D.

Practice A is Microscopic exam. This is a rapid check method. This can also be used to eveluate the health of SS 316L.

But Practice "A" should not be used for rejection (Can be used only for acceptnce).

If one observes ditch structure one shuld then choose other appropriate test methods (Say A 262 Pr E) for further evaluation.
