ASTMC42 - Load Orientation 1

I am currently coring shotcrete test panels for a tieback shotcrete wall system. ASTM C42 requires you specify axial or lateral for the direction of load applied with respect to the horizontal plane as concrete is placed. Am I to take that as lateral because of the actual loading condition or axial since we are breaking the cores with a load applied along the longitudinal axis? Thanks in advance.

It is axial with respect to the horizontal plane of the concrete as placed and lateral to the vertical plane of the concrete.

If you are creating your test panels with the same orientation as the retaining wall, then your cores will be drilled horizontally with respect to the wall orientation and tested parallel to the load application, which is correct (though it matters little).
