I carry out in-house pump repairs and modifications in a hazardous zoned area, I currently have responsibility for over 1000 pumps.Does anyone have any guidance as to when any pump repair breaks any ATEX certification. Can you only use manufacturers parts for repairs? Reading the ATEX regs, and taking into account the extent of repairs (read build from scratch from entirely copied and modified components) that I carry out, seems to put me in the position of "pump manufacturer" as defined by ATEX

If you are effectively copying the pump with your own pattern parts then this is new equipment and after 1 July 2003 it may need to be ATEX certified.
In general, if a repair or modification does not increase the risk of ignition then it will be acceptable.
This is a very complex issue and there are many factors that were not fully considered when the legislation was drafted
