I'm curious about what others use to attach large gaskets on heat exchangers at refineries, so that the gasket won't move during assembly.

I've heard somewhere that grease might make the gasket seal badly and also damage the graphite on the gasket. Many types of glue might give problems with chlorides.

Is any of that true?
What should one use?

Current practice in my site is to stick a few pieces of scotch tape, radially, along the whole flange face, and over the gasket... Cut long enough pieces of tape.
Clock reference: stick one piece of tape at 12, other sticks at 9 and at 3 if necessary. The same kind of tape you use for gift wrapping.
Of course, always apply a proper tightening schedule and a final leak test procedure.
