Need some help with attribute and how to manage Bom /numbers in an assembly.
First I have managed my attributes in the part attribute
Material , mount to, etc.
Now I want to manage the detail numbering in the assy.
I've seen at GM they managed it in the parameters of the property card in the assy of the detail.
Why not with the assy property of the detail in the assy.
Can anybody explain why and perhaps the best way to manage detail numbering in bigger assembleys

GM do use attributes for their parts list and manage them by sophisticated programming both in terms of their customization and their use of Teamcenter. In fairness to them their pre-existing method of creatng parts lists was nothing unlike practically anything else, and while changes may have taken place over time they have never adopted the simpler far more standard approach that is actually supported from within UG/NX.

Even GM don't actually assign item numbers based on attributes, (they may store then as such as part of their customization, but that isn't the same thing). If you did so at the component level then it would create problems when working with fasteners that are called up repeatedly in parts lists for many assemblies.

If you're starting our to create your own system that makes use of parts lists. I would urge you to use what NX supports. It is in line with most general drawing standards and will involve less by way of customization on your part. The item numbers are supported by way of a standard system attribute called "CALLOUT" and this is all outlined in the documentation. You will also drawing format templates that make a great starting point for you to adapt for your own use.

The way the callouts work in general is that you set up a partlist with a column generally named "ITEM" which calls the "CALLOUT" as its content. You then label the components with empty item balloons and when you update the parts list the item balloons are assigned numbers according to how trhe part list is sorted.

Other columns in the parts list will generally be assigned to attributes that you furnish with the appropriate text. It is usual to define these attributes, such as the part name, material etc within each component. The NX part list provides that when added to any assembly that information can be called up on drawings from the component so that it is maintained in one place not many.

To start with you could go into the Drafting Application, choose Insert>Parts List, and then hit F1 to access the help screen.
