auotmated and semi-automated Phase array technique 1

Hi every body
We want to use Phase array UT in lieu of RT. therefore we shall consider requirements of Code Case 181-2. Iam confused with a phrase stated in Code case 181-2, 1-a), it says(The examination shall be conducted using automated or semi-automated techniques utilizing computer based data acquisition.))
I wanted to know that:
1) do we have any manual Phase Array Technique and if yes can you describe it?
2) whats the difference between automated and semi-automated technique?
3) Does the ((automated or semi-automated technique)) refer to movement of search unit manually
or not ?
