My question is:can an auto-transformer (not a zig-zag)
derive a netural for a high resistance grounded system?
If so,what are the limitations and if not, why?
Thanks in advance for any ideas or thoughts on this subject.

No, you can't create a neutral with only an autotransformer. Basically, you need a zig-zag or a wye delta connection to provide a path for the zero sequence currents to flow.
