AutoCAD 2004 crashes

Need some help on troubleshooting why AutoCAD 2004 crashes when trying to move objects. Any time an object is either moved, stretched, or copied the system will do a fatal error and then shut down. The only thing I can find wrong with it is that the blocks that are being moved are from version 2000. Is there a conflict between importing a block created in autocad 2000 into 2004?

Some general questions: What RAM do you have on your system? What operating system are you currently using? What pagefile memory on your system? It sounds like you have a memory limitation problem. When inserting blocks into a drawing, it increases your drawing file size. Try this, instead of block insertion use XREF command to see if the problem goes away. Hope this helps - John

Try updating your video driver to the latest version, usually found on the video card manufacturer's web site.

All workstations are Windows XP, 512m of ram, video cards have 128mb of ram and the drivers have been downloaded off from web. Just wondering if the video card is not fully compatible. Seems very weird, I don't have that problem, but again, my machine is a ton different. Has anybody experienced this problem. It seems to only happen when multiple drawings are open.

I have read your response dated July 1 with considerable interest. You didn't mention what pagefile memory setting the system is using? This is important because this setting is used by the XP operating system to flip memory pages to your hard disk such that application program like Autocad operates without crashing from a memory problem. Also, you need to check on how much free space you have on your hard disk? If the operating system is flipping too big of a memory page to hard disk without adquate HD space will also result in crashing the application program? Hope this helps - John

What is min. page file memory size should the system be running on. I haven't checked yet, mainly to get an idea, plus when I do check I can make sure I set it accordingly.

Start with 2.5 times the physical memory but not more than 1Gig

well, its not the memory setting. Right now there is 756 set aside, so that eliminates that. I'm trying some configuration settings with the video card. Seems like it could be a refresh rate problem, or something along that lines. Will let everyone know on this post. Any suggestions please let me know.
Thanks

I've had trouble before with Acad 2000 and 2004 not wanting to play nice (importing files from 2000 causing system crash in 2004). My solution was to open the 2000 file in 2000, save as either 2000 .dxf or R12 .dxf. Then open the .dxf file from 2004, and life was good.

Sounds like a long way around some of our major problems. I'm wondering if AutoCAD has fixed this issue in 2005. I have a license of 2005, but have yet to install and use. Might be the next thing to do.

One final thought on finding out what is going on in Autcad. I want you to open several drawing without crashing the application program. At the command prompt enter STATUS. Carefully review the information to see what information doesn't look right. If all variables look ok then it not a Autocad problem. Hope this helps - John

It sounds like the memory to your video card is being fought over by AutoCAD and Windows. Try this--
Enter "WHIPTHREAD" at the command line, and set it to 0 or 1.
It will slow the refresh rate on your system, freeing up more memory to prevent problems.
