AutoCAD 2005 - My lines are not "COPLANAR"

Hi everyone,

Now, here's my thing. I draw some lines in my drawing, and when I try to work with them (say chamfer two lines, hatch them, snap to them at the intersection, etc.) AutoCAD refuses to do it, stating, "LINES ARE NOT COPLANAR." Normally, I understand English perfectly, but "coplanar" has got me stumped. I am thinking that what AutoCAD is stating that my lines are not on the same plane. The X- and Y-axes may be on the same plane, but for some reason, it is not on the same plane in the Z-plane. Did I get this right??

I cannot understand this, because both lines were drawn with the same settings, so that you'd think they'd have the same attributes, at least. They are the same color, the same level, the same everything, but AutoCAD insists that both lines are not coplanar.

The weird thing is that sometimes - for no known reason - AutoCAD will consider lines as coplanar - drawn exactly as all the other lines, and I can work with them: chamfer them, hatch time, snap to them at the intersection, etc.

Here are my questions:

(1) What is the best way to correct my "non-coplanar" lines so that I can work with them; so that I can snap to them at the intersection, hatch them, chamfer them, etc.?

(2) How do I prevent these from happening again?

(3) Why do they happen in the first place, and why are they so inconsistent? Does it have anything to do with setting my drawings to 2D or 3D settings?

Maybe some of you are aware of this, or have come across this problem before. Please help, my homies.

Thanks, guys and have a great weekend.

If you are using a recent version, just double click the two lines, and the properties box will open. Under "Elevation", it will say **varies**. Click in elevation and change it to a number...0 works, if you don't care about Z location.

AutoCAD always draws plines at elevation 0, unless you've specified another, by typing a value in format x,y,z. Also, if you snapped your start point to an object, the pline will have that elevation. If you don't snap to an object, it will be at z=0.

(1) If you have Express Tools you can use the "flatten" command to put the entities at elevation 0.

(3) Are you snapping to an entity with an elevation other than the z-value you want? I think 2006 has a setting to be able to snap to objects and keep the current elevation.
