AutoCAD 2015 - Isolating layers from within a Viewport

Just trying to find out if anyone else has had this issue.

Starting from a Layout Tab, I double-click within a Viewport to access Model Space. Then, selecting Isolate Layer(s) from the Ribbon, I select the layers I want to work with and hit <Enter>. All other layers get Frozen. So far, all is cool.

HOWEVER, when I select Unisolate from the Ribbon, nothing happens and all but the previously selected Layer(s) remain frozen.

1) Has anyone else noticed this?
2) Has anyone figured out why this occurs?
3) Does anyone have a work-around?

This is most aggravating when you have a group of Layers within a particular Viewport that you want to remain Frozen.

Isolate and Unisolate worked fine from within Viewports in AutoCAD 2012.

For a long time I've been typing "layiso" which turns the unselected layers OFF. It does not freeze them. Turn them all back on with "layon" when done.

What is this "ribbon" thingy you guys keep talking on about? [wink]

The Layiso and Layon commands apply universally to the whole drawing, not just layers as seen through a viewport. In most cases that doesn't affect my workflow. I carry out viewport-specific layer freezing if it does. My habit is to freeze layers that are rarely needed, and to turn OFF layers only temporarily to access specific ones for an operation. I turn everything ON once I'm done the operation, and the frozen ones stay frozen.

When you execute LAYISO, there is an option for Settings on the command line. Look into your Settings:

Select objects on the layer(s) to be isolated or [Settings]: s
Enter setting for layers not isolated [Off/Lock and fade] <Off>: o
In paper space viewport use [Vpfreeze/Off] <Vpfreeze>:

I use the layer manager and select "frozen in new" and "frozen in current" frozen layers icons to control all of this within a viewport. Frequently you want things in the "Front View" viewport to NOT show in the "Side View" viewport, etc. This requires some layer management on your part, but its the only way I've found to solve this problem. This used to be automatically controlled with the SOLVIEW and SOLDRAW commands (NOT Solprof- a different, and completely unrelated command, whose functionality was swallowed up in the later SOLDRAW command), but with the demise of SOLVIEW and SOLDRAW, this approach to layer visibility in viewports is no longer obvious. Fortunately LAYER STATES offers some assistance managing all of this, but I find it to be clunky, and rarely set up a Layer State I'll use again ...

One drawback - If you DO want SOME items on a layer you'd otherwise need to freeze in a particular viewport, you'll have to duplicate them on a layer you can thaw in that viewport. Otherwise, this is a reasonable solution to the problem. Again, it requires some layer management on your part, but WILL allow you the visible control you seek, and allows freeze and thaw in a viewport, at your command.

Good luck and post back with results?

cfee - I know how to do the work-around. I wanted to know if other have experienced the exact same phenomena.

There's really nothing to post back about. The Layer Freeze command does not have the same functionality within a ViewPort as it did in v2012.

Does picking the layer previous button change it back?

RHIPE-
Yes, its very disappointing when they "improve" things in a later release that worked fine before, and leave urepaired things that seem to have ongoing problems. Still, I was hoping that if you found a direct solution to the problem that eliminated the need for a "work-around" like the one I'd been forced to use (stemming from the old Solview/Soldraw days) you'd post back. Still hoping, but I COMPLETELY agree- if the actual functionality of the command has changed, little point in posting back when there's no effective solution. Oh well. Good Luck !
