I was recently sent a cad file of a layout for a new building.
I was asked to survey the as built concrete columns and walls to see if they are in the correct position.
I did this and overlayed my survey unto the layout i was sent. Both in dwg format.

For some reason which i cannot understand, when i measure the distance from my points to the design points on the original drawing ( using the measuring tool ) i get really weird dims. When i use the dimension aligned tool i get more sense.

would be grateful for any explanation.

I don't have 2015 but I sense that the scaling in layout for your overlay is different. I still deal with 2005 and I would have done the overlay in model space where I could easily match the dimensions by scaling and then do a final check in layout.

Even though i use Autocad a lot i was never trained to use it.
I have done the overlay in model space, How do i match the dimensions by scaling.

I can't discern which are design points and which are survey points from your drawing. However, I wonder if elevation may come into play. The DISTANCE command will give actual distance between points (slope distance). The Aligned Dimension will give you the distance in the current plane (horizontal distance).
 
Likely you are snapping to the points and the z value is being used in reported distances, as Terry mentions.

You could set the "osnapz" variable to "1" for distances (from "dist" command) to ignore the z values (distances projected to a plane).
Also adjust your settings to report distances with more precision, can do this by setting "luprec" to a higher number, or through menu, format units.


 
Agree with TerryScan. I assume you share / came off of the same control points with the design drawing? I normally make a backup copy of a drawing and block in my surveyed work.

CarlB's osnapZ is a new command to me. I've been using distance and an XY filter to snap for in-plane measurements. Thanks for the tip.
