This question may have been asked before !

But Ive just been looking at the compatability lists of programs that run on vista and according to the list Autocad 2002 runs on vista while all the lite programs before and including autocad 2006 Lt do not. Has anyone got Autocad 2002 running on vista and how is it working ?

Thanks !

Yes, and if you read it all, the only reason they used such an old version of AutoCAD was that they didn't want to buy a new version. wine is getting really good these days, and my husband seems to think the day where he can play his video games under wine is not far off. Over spring break I could get him to try AutoCAD 2008 or 2006 under wine. He keeps saying we run Windows on his desktop because I occasionally need to use Civil 3D at home (my work computer being too slow!) All our other computers are on Linux - either slackware or Ubuntu (the most user-friendly version). Well, and the OLPC XO laptop runs their version. :D

Very Interesting.

It would be a be step changing an operating system especially when your so used to it. In my opinion Windows xp is a great o/s, it still runs my very old Autocad Lt for windows 95 (I think its about equivalent to Autocad V13 !) and I never had any problems with it. So why change from Windows xp to wine/linux ? Also I sort of empathize with those guys using Autocad V14, however any autocad beyond 2000 is much better. I was bought up with autocad2002 and 2004. Anyway I may persue the above a bit more.

Thanks !

@Don Phillips,
thanks for the virus "js/psyme.MZ" on your site.

For what it is worth, this may be a moot point, but XP is becoming more popular by the day largely due to the negative issues surrounding Vista and its unfriendliness. Vista has been a giant slap in the face for Microsoft due largely to their own arrogance, but that is a thread for another day.

XP currently has SP3 in test (way cool!) and is avaialable, I believe, to have a look at. The future of Vista is hard to put a finger on, but I am putting my money on XP to out-last Vista. Some of what I have read is that Vista will not survive, MS has got to stop the bleeding, Vista has been costly for them.

My advice, go back to XP (as is the majority)and all of your Autodesk products will perform. If you need some confirmation you can google "XP SP3" and "Vista Future?"

Thanks OTHGWayne

Trouble is if your looking for a new computer they mostly come with Vista so what happens then? Can you insist on having Windows XP again?

Re: Vista, it seems to me like it's another Windows ME, which was really a not yet fully debugged XP. Still, there are other ethical problems our household has with Vista, the main one being DRM and the fact that Vista will decide whether or not you can play your media. I'm sure the RIAA contributed substantially to that aspect of the OS development, and thanks to them both we will soon be a purely Linux household.

Re: running later versions of AutoCAD under wine, my hubby said there are some graphical (insert jargon in the plural) that will not work yet with wine. However, wine's development team works faster than Microsoft's, so hopefully it won't be too far away that it's possible.

Thanks for the tip on the trojan. I use CA anti-virus on both my Vista desktop, XP Pro laptop, and my Small Business Server 2003 and they neither report it when I visit the hosted portion of my website. My daughter uses AVG on her Vista Home laptop so I'll ask her to visit it and see if she can duplicate things.

I have heard of legitamate code being labeled as viruses so I'll let my webhost know what I find.

Again, thanks for the tip.

I tried out my website on my daughter's laptop, and I did not get a warning until I reloaded the main page. I did notice my logo was visually way out of whack, so I completely revamped the site using my ISP's web-based editor rather than Frontpage. I suspect AVG did not like a certain string in the temp file created for the logo. It was based on WordArt within Word. If anyone is still having that trojan warning, let me know.

Sorry civeng80 I didn't reply sooner.

You are right, it is difficult to buy a new PC without Vista right now. My solution has been to spend an extra $100 get a new harddrive. When you get the new machine throw away the harddrive and replace with one you bought. I have heard that Vista is almost impossible to get rid of from a HD, even if you format. So I throw it away, buy a new drive, load up XP and I am good to go. Harddrives are pretty cheap these days.

OTHGWayne, you should get that HD back. Reformats won't remove the data from the drive. You need to overwrite the entire drive with disk cleaner. Basically it overwrites all the data on the HD with random static. After its done the HD is like new and you can format it and install your OS. Do a google search for HD wipe or disk wipe there are several free programs out there that will do a good job. On a side note if you ever sell or dispose of your old PC remember to wipe the HD to remove any personal information that may be stored there. Simply deleting the information does not remove it from the HD.

You are absolutely correct. My statement "throw away" was not literal. I would never let personal data out of the house. It was only a figurative comment meaning "not use".

Nevertheless, your comment is well meant and good for others to hear.
