AUTOCAD - File Size

I am facing a problem with the size of the AutoCad dwg files when working on the solid modeling, specially when the number of details increase. Beside purging is there any other way to minimize the size?

Save as a really old version might help.

Or just buy a bigger, faster, hard drive.
