Is there a storm sewer sizing program that is compatiable with the AutoCadd Land Development PipeWorks program? For example, importing and exporting of the output from the program to autocadd and vice versa.?

Hydraflow is a nice program to use with the alignments exported from CAD. It is easier to work with than LD. But any reports/info. generated in Hydraflow cannot be exported to CAD.

I have not personally used the following program, but have seen it in action and would definitely recommend it for review. You can read about PipeX at the following web address:

One of the beautiful things about this program is that you can make changes to the design in the LDD project without ever opening a drawing. Also, it has intelligence when creating profiles, etc.

Hope this helps. Jeff Foster, PE

I'm an English civil engineer and for drainage design we use a program suite called MicroDrainage, which has a module that integrates with AutoCad and other 3D programs such as MX or PDS. So that 3D features such as ground level or road alignment alignment can be tranferred into the drainage design programs.

I suppose that Hydraflow is somewhat similar.

Just a boring question - what method do you guys use in the US to determine peak rainfall for determining pipe sizes?

GRSMITH,

Haestad Method's StormCad supposedly has the capability you are looking for (still hoping to convince the boss to get it). Apparently, you can export pipeworks data into StormCad and do your desing (pipe sizing and inverts) and then export back into pipeworks.

To answer your question Tony about Hydrologic methods, here in the southwestern U.S. we typically use the rational method to calc peak discharges for storm drain design.

Tony - the Rational method is only used for small areas and is not appropriate for areas over approximately 160 acres. (This number is commonly debated..) For larger areas, a method which utilizes hydrographs must be used. SCS unit hydrographs are commonly used.

There is a good solution for both storm and sanitary sewers.
PIPE Design Pro Sewer Planning System offers a consistent, flexible design environment for creating sewer system design plans and implementation drawings.
In addition, this new software takes advantage of the powerful features of AutoCAD 2002, making it a state-of-the-art, complete solution for effective and efficient sewer system design.
This integrated package allow generation and editing of plan information, automatically performs profile designs from that data, and automatically generates profile drawings, flow reports, and plan-profile drawings.

This system supports the XML data format, which is expected to become the worldwide standard for transferring complex formatted documents and data between systems as well as onto the Internet, creating a true open environment.
