Can anyone tell me the difference between a locked and unlocked version of autocad. I have the autocad 2006 locked version (on two computers). I want to buy a new computer and transfer the license from the 2 computers to the new one, can it be done or am I stuck with the old computers ?

Thanks !

I believe that all releases of AutoCAD 2006 are locked (as are 2007 & 2008). You should check and read your license agreement as to how many and under what circumstances you can have one license on more than on computer.

As for installing and authorizing the license on a 3rd computer... as long you uninstall it from at least one of the older ones and again, comply with the licensing agreement.

As for your new computer, is it going to have Windows XP or Vista as the Operating System would be the better question AND can you sucessfully install 2006 on a Vista PC if that's the OS you are going with...

Basically you will need a new authorization code on the new computer as it is hardware/software/serial number specific.

I have one licence agreement (portable licence) which means I can have autocad on 2 computers with one operator of course. I have this now. My new computer will have windows xp and I will be removing autocad from the 2 computers and installing on my new computer.

How will I get a new orthorization code ?

If you have the portable licence agreement then you should have a "portable licence utility" which should allow you to migrate the licence to the new PC.

Run the utility before you remove the software from the old PC and it should give you the codes you need to get the software working on the new PC, that is how I have done it in the past and it has worked with 3 different PCs but I must admit I have not done it with anything newer than 2005.
