Hello,

I am trying to spec out an Automatic capacitor bank for the first time. The cap will sit on the 600v side of 100kva 2400v/600v transformer along with a couple motor loads. No drives, or plcs are present so I have been told that harmonics are not a problem. The rating of the capacitor we have chosen for the system is a 600v,300kvar,60hz capacitor bank. However, I am not sure about other ratings such as kvar/step and step sequence, etc? Anythoughts?

Thanks in advance.

tulum, a 300kVAR capacitor for a 100kVA transformer? Or did you mean 1000kVA?
As for the size of the steps, three to eight can be typical, and this would depend on the range of PF you are trying to correct. You want the size of the steps to be small enough so that you will not cause overcorrection.
The newer units automatically randomize the sequence of switching so that each step is used equally.

Dandel,

Thank you... you are right 1000kva.

For low-voltage capacitors, I am not a fan of ‘midget’ {Class-CC, -T, or type-M dimension} fuses for capacitor-can overcurrent protection—Class-J fuses are consistently more “durable”.
