Automatic Trans

Friend of mine installed an AOD ford auto trans into his
classic car. oops the thing was sitting for 8 years.

the valve box is getting clogged & the balls , pins or what ever inside is clogging up. It quit shifting correctly , but some what works.

what is his options?
rebuild or ?

Overhaul / rebuild is a good option. Seals could be crusty.
The valve body is likely rusted and or gummed up. Needs inspection and cleaning.

I hope he has the TV cable adjusted somewhere near right, else you'll be doing more than just cleaning it.

The most damaging thing with any gearbox that sits for long periods is surface corrosion. Your friend's AT has steel gears, shafts, clutch plates, valve body parts, etc. that will corrode rapidly when in contact with water. When idle, almost all of those AT parts are above the sump fluid level. So they are exposed to the humid air within the housing which will quickly cause surface corrosion.

The valve body is also in the bottom of the sump, so any moisture that accumulates in the remaining trans fluid will separate into the bottom of the sump due to its higher sp. gr. The valve body parts have very close tolerance fits and don't use any seals, so any corrosion or surface build-up will affect their operation.

Rebuilding a Ford AT doesn't cost much, so that's probably a smart move regardless.
