I am in the process of designing/building a automotive cylinder bore honing machine for myself. The one thing that I would like to incorporate is measuring of the bore on the fly. I really dont care about size, I am looking at bore shape. Yes I know I could use a incometer, maybe a topometer but crap did you see the price. Defeats the entire purpose of me building it myself. I will take any help possible. Thanks.

I have exactly one of these from Shars and I tried it. Glad to see some one post on ideas. This worked but, the hone is traveling so quickly, I couldnt read it. It then became apparent that I would have to hook to some kind of PC or ?. Crap was a good idea though.

So you illuminate the indicator with a strobe light. ... which is kind of tricky because if the hone drive is any good, synchronizing the strobe to any point of stroke or any point of rotation will still give you a moving image. ... so that's no good.

All that's left is to mount a TV camera to stare at the indicator while traveling with it, add an RF link to a stationary monitor, and Bob's your uncle.

I cringe even thinking about subjecting my low end bore gage's hardened tips to anything but a cleaned bore.
And to keep on top of taper/barrel/bell mouth I had to monitor them frequently when finishing cylinders.

I remember reading about one of the Japanese manufacturers reading block deck milling on the fly by directing compressed air thru an orifice in a block that hovered over the surface a fraction of a mm. Very small changes in height (equivalent to 10,000ths of an inch) could be detected by changes in the flow rate of the air. Could you make a similar block that rotated with the hone, and detected variations by changes in flow?
