I will be joining two pieces of A500 Gr B rectangular tubing using FCAW per AWS D1.1. They will joined outside wall to outside wall making the joint a "Flare V Groove". Am I correct when describing this joint configuration as a "Flare V Groove"? Does AWS D1.1 recognize a "Flare V Groove" as a prequalified weld joint? If so, what is its joint designation.
I am suspecting a PQR will necessary to qualify this joint.
Please advise.

rocket:
1.) Yes, that is a flare-V joint configuration.
2.) AWS D1.1:2002, 2.3.1.4 provides info on the effective area for flare-groove welds, Table 2.1 specifies the minimum required effective weld size (E).
3.) It is not prequalified. Go to AWS D1.1:2002, 4.10.5 for flare-groove weld qualification requirments.

It should be noted the code does not address tubular PJP groove welds specifically. 4.28 denotes (performance) qualification of CJP groove welds will qualify PJP groove welds for tubular applications.
