Performance qualification to AWS D1.2. Testing on 6" sch 40 (.280" wall) 6061 groove weld, for a cyclically loaded application. Table 3.8 number 3 (cyclically loaded tubular structures) calls out 4 different pipe sizes for this test, of which 6" sch 40 is not listed. So I then go to Table 3.8 number 4 (job size pipe or tubing), which directs me to remove 4 side bends, for any wall thickness on pipes greater than 4" nominal. Typically you would expect to remove face and root bends for a 6" sch 40, yet this Table clearly states side bends. Any thoughts on this?

If the applicable code only lists side bends, then side bends it is.

You have to remember this is a code written by many of the same folks that bought us the 2015 edition of the Farm Code where it is permitted to weld on surfaces contaminated with "residual" oil, grease, ........

Like any code touched by human hands and corrupted by human thought, imperfections are likely to creep in. This might simply be one of those situations. Did you check the AWS website to see if there is an errata that applies to this situation?

Best regards - Al
