AWS D1.5 - UT instead of RT

Hi all,

Posting here since it seems more appropriate.

According to AWS D1.5, table 8.1, CJP butt joints in tension are required to be tested using RT. The contractor is requesting that the RT requirement be voided and replaced with any other testing. They are having issues placing the edge bars in the rounded weld access holes for the splices. They propose doing UT NDT but I am not sure about this. Does anyone know of any substitution clause or have experience with substitutions for RT testing?

Any help or references are greatly appreciated!

I only have an old edition (2008) - Clause 6.7.1 could be appropriate for you.
Suggest you do a Word search in the edition you are working to - do not think something major like that would be removed.

Hi DekDee,

Thank you for the suggestion. I could not find what you referenced. We ended up requiring the RT since it was possible for the Contractor to perform.
