AWS Weld Symbology - Number of Fillet Welds

I have been reviewing the AWS weld symbols trying to understand how I call out a certain number of fillet welds on a drawing. From what I can see the number indicator (placed below the symbol) only applies to projection and spot welds. For fillet welds, I need to specify the length and the pitch between the weld centres. How do I specify how many welds I need in that joint (i.e. 3 stitch welds vs 4)?

Thanks,
Jeff

According to the AISC Manual, which follows the AWS I believe, the length and pitch are placed between the weld symbol and the end of the reference line where the leader is placed and follows the format "L at P" meaning "length at spacing". If you need a certain number, I would put that in a reference note at the tail, but I can't say that's the official way to go.

Unfortunately, the Volvo standard is ISO, not AWS/ASME.

One side of joint:
One the drawing show the total distance of the intermittent welding plus spacing to the start of the continuous weld.
For a 5x 2-5 the total distance is 28"

Opposites sides of the joint:
On the drawing show the total length of the intermittent welding.
For a 5x 2-5 the total distance is 22"

Here is a great website for understanding weld symbols

Never argue with an idiot. They'll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience every time.

Thanks for all your replies. As I see it the short answer is that AWS does not allow the specification of fillet welds by number of welds. The length, pitch & placement must be specified and the number of welds has to be inferred (calculated) from it.

Thanks,
Jeff

But you can still make a note in the tail of the weld rather than leaving someone to do the division in their head.
