AWS Welder qualification for multiple processes

Dear all,

A multiple process weld is performed on one of my projects. Applicable standard is AWS D1.1.
Starting with GTAW for the root and 1st layers and then filling and capping with SAW.

My question is : May it be possible to qualify one welder for both processes at the same time ?
The expected welder qualification will be practiced according to the WPS used for this weld (same processes, same sequence, same dimensions (diameter & thickness), same positions.
This welder qualification will only be used for the specific weld described above.
Welder qualification tests will be practiced according to AWS requirements.

The welder who performed the weld qualification (WPQR) is qualified but we want to qualify one additional welder.
The AWS D1.1 does no mention anything concerning the welder qualification for multiple process weld. Is this meaning that this practice is not allowed ?
Thanks in advance for your help

AWS does not have a provisios for qualifying a welder on a single test coupon using multiple welding processes. My opinion is based on the fact that the range of the welder's qualifications is based on the thickness of the test plate, not the thickness of the weld deposit. As such, there is no provision to record the thickness of the individual weld deposit. As such, there is no means or mechanism to determine the thickness range for which the welder is qualified if the root was deposited with one process and the remainder deposited with a second welding process.

This approach differs from ASME Section IX where the welder is qualified for a range of deposit thicknesses. Thus, multiple welding processes can be used on the same test coupon and the welder can be qualified for multiple welding processes simultaneously. Keep in mind that someone must be present to record the thickness of the weld deposit while the welder is welding the test coupon. It not a case where the individual completing the performance test report can "guess" at the thickness deposited with each welding process.

Unlike ASME SEction IX where a welder qualified to a maximum thickness of 3/4 inch can weld the first 3/4 inch of a 1 inch thick joint, the welder under the auspices of AWS D1 must be qualified for the full thickness of the joint being welded (based on a publishe AWS code interpretation).

Best regards - Al
