We are thinking of using fuel gas as a blanket for our ethylene glycol storage tank. The boiler for the glycol is downstream approx. 10-15 feet away. Is it a bad idea to have a fuel gas blanket on a vessel so close to an ignition source. Does anyone know what code or standard gives spacing regulations regarding these situations?

Consider checking NFPA 59, Utility LP-Gas Plant Code.

Why are you putting a pad gas on ethylene glycol anyway? If it was me I would not put a flammable gas on top of a relatively inert fluid. It just makes things more difficult. Why not just put a concervation vent on the top of the tank or pad with N2?
