Quick question.
It was always my understanding that forged flanges in accordance with B16.5 needed to be shape forged.
However I can't find any reference in the standard to support this.
Can anyone comment on whether this is a requirement, or can we use round, forged bar to manufacture forged flanges in accordance with B16.5?
Thanks.

I don't think so.

Para 5.1 gives you all the details though written in some mangled English.

5.1(a) (1) states plate and flat bar can only be used for blind flanges and reducing flanges without hubs

5.1 (b) seems to say that the flange should be made from something approaching the shape of the flange.

(b) Each forged flange shall be finished from a part that
is brought as nearly as practicable to the finished shape
and size by a compressive plastic hot-working operation
that consolidates the material to produce an essentially
wrought structure, and shall be so processed during
the operation as to cause metal flow in the direction
most favorable for resisting the stress encountered in
service.

Yes, that (b) is exactly what I was looking for.
Not sure how I managed to miss that, it's pretty clear cut despite not being that well written.
Cheers LittleInch!
